On August 25, 2025 a television spot that I filmed with SCVTV about supporting literacy in elementary schools through author school visits aired on local television Spectrum 20 as well as https://scvtv.com, and YouTube SCVTV. Adalgisa Nico, Author of books, Fish in the Desert, Frogs on the Mountain, and soon to be released Fishers in the Forest , joined me as we are both active in a group, SCVCBAI, SCV Children's Books Authors and Illustrators. I founded SCVCBAI, in 2022 to support authors and illustrators of children's books in the craft of creating great children's books and to foster literacy in young readers. Since then, our group has visited many local schools to read and entertain elementary age children.
Before the interview, I have to admit, I was nervous. However, the hosts Carrie Lujan and Dave Caldwell were so gracious and were genuinely interested in our endeavor to support elementary classrooms through author visits, that I almost instantly felt as ease. In addition to questions about our mission, costumes we wear, and content of a visit, they asked how a school could book a visit. I shared that a principal, teacher, or parent could reach out via our contact page on our website.
I hope to revisit the SCVTV Community Corner again in the spring to discuss the importance of SEL (social-emotional) learning in elementary classrooms and how children's books can be a BIG part in developing lessons to support that learning. Comment below if you want to learn more about our school visits or if you want to book a visit!
